Of all the work I have been privileged to Direct since working at Señor Z, this Olympic reportage is by far and away what I am most proud of. As I have been primarily making tv commercials, this was a unique opportunity to get back into the documentary genre which I have a great affinity for.

On almost a nothing budget, a small crew went with Gonzalo and I to the town of Junin – one of the highest small towns in Peru at 4,100 meters (13,451 feet). A 7 hour drive from Lima into the peeks of the Andes on roads that make Rally racing look like The Sound of Music. It was physically the most challenging shoot of my life: a severe and constant headache, cold that goes through however many layers you put on, absolute fatigue after walking 5 feet because the air is so thin (I personally sucked down and entire oxygen tank in those 3 days) and honestly, tasteless food – fruit, veggies, and spices don’t make it that way.

Nevertheless what came of this is (like I said before) the best work I have been a part of at Z and I am honored to have done this with such a great group of people. To date, this reportage has had over 1.5 million You Tube hits. How ’bout that for exposure. I hope you enjoy.

My producer (Darren Goldberg) and I connected with Christine at a symposium that she was part of at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival. During one of the coffee breaks the three of us had a brief chat and I reminded her that we had actually met once before when she came to lecture at the Binger Film Lab in Amsterdam where I was workshopping the Oliver’s Deal script in the end of 2008.

About two weeks later as I was walking down the street in Lima, I got a call from Darren saying that Christine read Oliver’s Deal and really took to it, so much so that she was coming on as the project’s Executive Producer. A few days later, Christine (in LA at the time), Darren (in NY), and myself (in Lima) had a three-way Skype call (love technology) and she kindly commented on how much she appreciated the script. Amongst other things, she said that ‘for her the story was thought provoking, timely, and an important subject matter … and that she was going to help us get the film made.’

It has been a long roller-coaster of a journey to get this far I tell you, and I’d be lying if I said that at times it hasn’t been hard. But really, I am most grateful – I have learned so much and to be a part of / watch this project come together has been amazing. One thing I can say that I have learned for sure: it takes real sweat and commitment to put a major motion picture together – there seem to be an infinite amount of moving parts. And I thought putting a short together was work … this is no joke! Fortunately Darren has stuck by my side and believed in me and this project since its inception – truly the mark of a great Producer, Manager and friend. And now the Oliver’s Deal team has its Executive Producer – a key member to help bring this film to fruition. Piece by piece we are getting there.

Christine Vachon, we are honored, grateful, and very excited to be working with you. Many thanks!
